Lee Carsley will guide England through their September matches in the Nations League after the current Under-21 boss was confirmed as interim senior manager on Friday.
With the Football Association currently on the hunt for a permanent successor to Gareth Southgate, and with a fairly low-key set of autumn matches in prospect after relegation from the top-tier of the Nations League, Carsley will take charge for matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Having played his own international football for the Republic and been a contender to become their new manager, the ex-Derby County and Coventry City midfielder will now be in the visitors' dugout at Dublin's Aviva Stadium.
With Southgate having followed the same path, from Under-21's to interim to permanent manager, could the 50-year-old, who led his young charges to European Championship glory last year, yet stake a claim to do the same?
