England set off on road to 2026

Europe's World Cup qualifying schedule will be drawn on Friday morning with England set to learn the opponents who will stand in their way on the road to the 2026 tournament in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

Thomas Tuchel's mission to bring the trophy back to England for the first time since 1966 will also become clearer as the incoming Three Lions head coach will know who to begin his analysis of ahead of qualifying, which will start in March should England be drawn in a five-team group which is the more likely scenario than a four-team section given the complexities of the draw.

A Pot 1 seeding means Tuchel's side will not be up against any of the traditional continental heavyweights but some dangers still lurk in the other pots, including the other home nations.

England have however, in recent years certainly, been comfortable qualifiers for the major tournaments and will be strongly fancied to do so again in 2025.

The bookmakers, this far out, currently rate England as fourth favourites to win the competition as a whole, behind France, Spain and Brazil.
