Tuchel begins England role

Thomas Tuchel attended his first Premier League game as England manager on Saturday, the German having officially started his role on January 1.

With a trio of backroom appointments also announced, Tuchel will spend the next couple of months assessing the players available to him for the opening World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia at Wembley in March.

His first assignment was the game between Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United and a worthwhile trip as Anthony Gordon netted for a visting side who also had defenders Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, named in Lee Carsley's final squad, in their starting XI.

Dominic Solanke, who made his return to the senior England ranks in October, scored Tottenham's opener in a 2-1 defeat while James Maddison came on as a substitute.

Tuchel then set off for Sussex to take in Brighton's 1-1 draw with Arsenal, Declan Rice in the visiting line-up although Bukayo Saka is currently absent through injury.
